How to cool AMD Ryzen Threadripper Processors?

The Ryzen Threadripper is the new CPU from AMD for high-end systems – which possibilities do you have to efficiently cool a CPU with up to 16 cores?

Up to 16 cores and 32 threads, 4,096 pins, 64 PCI-E 3.0 lanes, quad-channel DDR4 RAM and 180 W TDP: The new AMD Ryzen Threadripper are very powerful CPU and with sufficient reserves even for demanding tasks.

The physical dimension of the Threadripper alone show the need for a powerful cooling solution. With the mentioned 4,096 pins the CPUs are significantly larger than other processors for private use.

Due to the size the new SocketTR4 was developed with its own chipset, X399. Cooling solutions, which still fit on equally new AMD AM4 socket, can’t be mounted on sTR4 Mainboards.

With prices starting at 800 EUR, the CPUs are not a bargain, but they are among the most powerful processors a home user can currently buy. Threadripper Processors promise excellent performance in particularly when multiple CPU Cores are needed, e.g. for gaming, video rendering, and other demanding applications.

But how to cool such large and powerful processors effectively?

Adjusted CPU Cooler needed

Because of the larger design, conventional CPU air coolers, which are compatible with AMD’s AM4 Socket and are designed for regular Ryzen processors, won’t fit the sTR4 for Threadripper CPUs.

Threadripper CPU coolers can, however, usually also be mounted and used on Ryzen processors in the AM4 socket.

Due to the high performance and the resulting high heat level of about 180 W TDP, AMD conducted extensive tests to check the compatibility of the cooling solutions available on the market.

  1. I hope you have planned to cool the Vega 64 and 56.
    With a power of 300W to dissipate without overclock I think this is the biggest challenge of all times.
