Is the new AIO going to get launched soon? When do the ARCTIC coolers start blinking? We are often confronted with some interesting questions about ARCTIC’s technologies and product development. As we like to provide you with some first-hand information, we asked our Technical Director Vincent Andre some tricky questions. So what is our R&D department actually up to?
Can you first tell us about your role @Arctic?
My role at ARCTIC has multiple aspects, first, I am the head of the R&D department; bringing the projects from mere concept to reality. It all starts with the product’s functional concept, which is followed by developing an attractive design by our Industrial Designer. Then, our team of skilled engineers develops the mechanical structure and electronic board by using the latest CAD tools. We fine-tune the design by simulating the product performance by computer. As simulation can be thrown off by the slightest configuration deviation, we always double confirm the finalized design with prototypes. Our R&D centre in Hong-Kong has numerous testing equipment to verify all aspects of our products. Afterwards, the purchasing and NPI teams will take care of the last leg of the product development, which is defining the right suppliers and helping them to get the production line ready for mass production, Additional they make sure the quality requirements are followed and every detail is done right.
Besides that, I overview the IT development of the company either internally concerning new equipment and software or externally concerning our website. Lastly, together with Magnus Huber, our CEO and Peter Jankowski, our Sales Director, we define the company’s strategy.
Are there some interesting product launches planned for this year?
Our Alpine family, the low-end part of our CPU coolers will soon undergo a total facelift. The aim is to better supply the AMD segment, now relived with Ryzen, but as well to make the product choice for our customers more clear and concise.
Our Freezer family will as well continue to expand in both air coolers and liquid coolers. The existing models will also continue to evolve in order to offer our users the latest performance gain that our engineers identified.
Our fans series will as well be extended with quite a few new models.
Finally yet importantly, on the VGA cooling front, we are now working on a cooler that offers excellent performance. It keeps a GTX 1080 Ti in thirties degrees C, and the VRM in the fifties. We are working with some partners to make it available soon.
Can you tell us some news concerning technical solutions of ARCTIC products?
We have been working lately on improving our cooler performance further, while maintaining their production cost. I am happy to report already that we are successful in this regard and achieved significant progress on all types of coolers. So in 2018, expect to see ARCTIC’s products going higher in the performance charts while remaining in the lower price segment. That is what we believe in ARCTIC: Performance comes at a cost, yes, but that cost can be controlled!
Design and visuality play an important role for gamers. How are ARCTIC products going to look like in the coming years?
Well, it is honestly difficult to predict years ahead of time, but as our latest Freezer 33 eSports Edition/One and TR showed, we are now putting more effort in the cosmetics of our products. But there is a catch. We saw lately a lot of products where the design is greatly improved but impede the performance, the biggest example being the Tempered Glass PC cases with their “fan-choking” designs. We at ARCTIC do not want to lose any performance and therefore, we take our time to get the solution heavily tested so that this kind of perils do not happen. We also want to do it right, some RGB products we saw lately are simply improvable, they have limited configuration, the light is unevenly spread etc. We believe that having a new design feature should be implemented fully, not just added as a last minute change. That’s why ARCTIC products have no RGB… yet.
