Liquid Freezer II Revision 3 Mounting issues

Liquid Freezer Rev. 2

During the last few weeks, we have received queries concerning the mounting of Liquid Freezer II coolers on AM4 motherboards. Unfortunately, some AMD AM4 boards are incompatible or only partially compatible with the AMD mounting clips supplied with Liquid Freezer II Rev. 3 cooler.

We understand your frustration and apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused you, particularly for customers who needed to wait longer time for an answer from our support teams during the holiday times.

Here is a short guide about the most common issues when mounting a Liquid Freezer II cooler on AM4 motherboards and how you can handle them. Please note that Intel motherboards are fully compatible:

#1: Non-standard backplate

Some AM4 motherboard manufacturers have used a backplate that does not stick out as much as the standard one on the top of the motherboard. As a result, the standoffs we used are too short, which can potentially lead to difficulty installing the cooler.

On Rev. 3 coolers, there is an additional issue as for some boards: the clip can interfere with capacitors or inductors instead of floating above them.

Which products are affected?
Liquid Freezer II Rev. 3 are affected to varying degrees depending on the AM4 motherboard.

What is the solution?
Please contact our support to get a backplate that complies with official AMD specifications free of charge.

#2: Loose backplate

In earlier versions of the AM4 socket, backplates were stuck adhered to the motherboard. In new versions of the motherboard, the backplate is no longer adhered to the motherboard. As a result, when installing our cooler, the backplate, standoff and clips are not able to be tightly secured to the board, leaving it wobbly. Once the cooler is installed, however, there is no further wobbling.

Which products are affected?
Liquid Freezer II Rev. 3.

What is the solution?
Expected behaviour, there is nothing to worry about. When the cooler is fully assembled, there is no wobbling.

#3: Wrong thread on screws

The small M3x5 screws used to secure the clip on the standoffs have a wrong thread, as a result it is not possible to screw the clip in place properly (the screw goes in halfway only).

Which products are affected?
Some Liquid Freezer II Rev. 3 coolers are affected.

What is the solution?
If you experience this problem, please contact our support and they will provide you the replacement screw packs free of charge. You can also use a standard M3x5 screw, commonly available to screw the 2.5″ HDD/SSD.

The factory production has been adjusted and the problem is solved.

#4: M.2/VRM interference

Our special clip extends outside the socket area when using the offset mount that we recommend for Ryzen 3000/5000 series. As a result, the clip collides with the M.2 or VRM components right outside the socket area of some motherboards.

Which products are affected?
All Liquid Freezer II Rev. 3 coolers are affected. This issue only exists when using offset mounting for Ryzen 3000/5000.

What is the solution?
Please use the standard mount, not the offset mount.

Current clip (rev3) in standard mount position fits without problem.
